Learning from Major Accidents
| Client: | Netherlands Oil & Gas Exploration and Production Association (NOGEPA) |
| Date: | July 2011 |
| Project scope: | Capture learning from major accidents and adopt best practices |
Introduction
The recent Macondo accident has provided the oil and gas industry with a wake up call just as the Piper Alpha did 22 years earlier. Because of the change that came into effect following the Piper Alpha the offshore regimes around the North Sea are considered world class. Despite this all of these regimes, including The Netherlands, initiated a review of current practices to ensure enough had been done to prevent a similar accident happening in the North Sea.
Scope of Work
GeotechInvest was contracted by NOGEPA to lead a number of workgroups and provide technical writing services. These specific workgroups were focussed on looking at preventative measures and resulted in GeotechInvest producing the following deliverables.
- Well Contruction Process Checklist.
- Surface BOP Best Practices Checklist.
- Critical Well Components Standards & Acceptance Checklist.
- A Well Examination Scheme for The Netherlands.
GeoTechInvest continues to support NOGEPA with these initiatives including those more focused on dealing with an emergency situation should it arise.
